The most basic Oliver coating is made up of random-shaped "grits" of tungsten-carbide, and is available in many grits sizes. The crushed grit sizes are similar to the grit sizes you are familiar with for sandpaper, such as #23, #36, #46, etc. While the crushed grit coatings do not offer as great of cutting efficiency as some other Oliver coatings, they are excellent for punishing applications such as grinding of fiberglass, soft ceramics, and some types of stone. They also work well for many gripping or drive (traction) applications. Unlike sandpaper, the grits are permanently brazed onto a steel surface for long life.
